FAQ
Q: What does "Corkdork" mean?
A: A "corkdork", or "cork dork", is someone who is knowledgeable, passionate and borderline-obsessed with all things wine and wine culture.
Q: Why do I need a wine list scanner?
A: Wine lists can be quite extensive, sometimes over a hundred pages in length with thousands of wines. This makes it almost impossible, even for the most experienced sommeliers, to make a recommendation taking all wines into consideration. Not to mention, a sommelier may not be familiar with your personal tastes and preferences, including wines you've already had. That's where Corkdork can be very useful. By no means do you need to scan the whole wine list–you may want to scan just a page or two–but with Corkdork you have the option.
Q: Wait, what is a sommelier?
A: Pronounced suh·muhl·yay, a sommelier is a trained wine expert who has made it their profession to build and support the wine program of a restaurant or other service establishment.
Q: Isn't a wine list scanner just taking the place of the sommelier?
A: Corkdork is less like a sommelier–who, at no fault of their own, may be inclined to recommend something the restaurant needs to clear our of inventory–and more like your nerdy wine friend who knows your tastes, as well as fancy words like "Sauternes," phrases like "extended maceration," the difference between Left and Right Bank Bordeaux, and signs online petitions to introduce white wine and rosé wine emojis into the Unicode lexicon. (Sidebar: on the latter, this should happen because, for oenophiles, communicating with just the red wine emoji is simply insufficient). Wine is personal because tastes are personal, and Corkdork fosters that.
Q: What are wine tasting notes?
A: Wine tasting notes are a structured collection of notes taken down during a wine tasting. The purpose of taking wine tasting notes is to determine a wine's overall quality by individually examining the look, smell, and taste of a wine. In the long run, a collection of wine tasting notes becomes a journal-like record of all of the wines you have tasted in the past.
Q: I don't know anything about wine. Why would I use Corkdork?
A: Corkdork does not require you to have any wine knowledge at all. That said, like anything, experience matters. In the case of wine, the best way to get "good" at it is by tasting as many wines as you possibly can. Learning to understand the nuances of wine is like learning to understand the nuances of art. It takes time, patience, and most importantly, plenty of practice. That’s where Corkdork comes in with its step-by-step tasting guide.
Q: If I taste a lot of wines, won't I just get drunk?
A: Remember that tasting is not the same thing as drinking or consuming. The majority of wine professionals do not consume the wine they taste, at least not while in professional settings. In other words: spit, don't swallow. You don't want to get tipsy or drunk while examining and tasting wines, as this may inhibit your senses and your overall ability to properly gauge their qualities and characteristics. In no way do we condone the irresponsible consumption of alcohol, which is why, first and foremost, you must be at least 21 years of age to use Corkdork.
Q: Why do I need to sign up in order to use Corkdork?
A: Corkdork is cloud-based in order to allow you to access it from multiple devices. As we grow, we want to make sure that our foundation is versatile enough to accommodate future needs, like other mobile platforms, web, etc. To make this as easy and seamless as possible, you may use either Sign In with Apple or an email address. Q: Who is Corkdork+ meant for?
A: Corkdork+ is meant for anyone from wine newbies, to master sommeliers, to everyone in between. If you are looking for better, more personal, more powerful wine recommendation and tasting notes solutions, whether for work or because wine is your passion (or both), Corkdork+ is for you.
Q: What is the benefit of subscribing to Corkdork+?
A: Corkdork+ enables you to reference prior wine list picks and tastings for better wine list recommendations, as well as create unlimited wine tastings, schedule wines to revisit, track wine list picks, track wine list tastings with powerful analytics, save wine tasting drafts, and take more detailed notes during wine tastings.
Q: What does "revisit" mean?
A: To revisit a wine means to re-taste a wine all over again, either at the end of a series of tastings, or at a later date. Revisit tastings have the added benefit of capturing qualitative characteristics of a wine that develop the longer it has been open and exposed to oxygen. This may help you pick up on things you may have missed. We encourage our users to revisit their wines and enable them to set reminders to do so, as well as review and compare results and averages across tastings.
Q: What is the difference between monthly and yearly Corkdork+ subscriptions?
A: They are absolutely the same apart from the way you are charged and the total cost per year. With Corkdork+ annual, you save around 37% versus if you pay for twelve individual months. If you know Corkdork is an app you will be using throughout the year and beyond, we recommend the annual option.
Q: Is there a free trial for Corkdork+?
A: Yes, we offer a one-week free trial for both monthly and yearly Corkdork+ subscriptions. This means you can try all of the advanced features for free for one week and, if it's not for you, you may cancel before getting charged. Apple will send you a reminder notification, typically via email, within 24 hours prior to being charged.
Q: Why does Corkdork+ cost money?
A: Corkdork is funded entirely by the subscriptions it sells through the app. Although at one point we did show in-app advertising, we found it detracted too much from the user experience we are working hard to achieve. Therefore, we do not show ads within the app, either. Finally, we do not sell your personal data to third-part data brokers or marketers.
Q: How can I delete my account?
A: To delete your account, open the app. While signed in and on the screen titled "Wine Tastings", press the account icon (👤) in the tab bar at the bottom. This will take you to the account screen. At the top of the account screen, in the navigation bar, press the action button with the upwards arrow (⬆️). Next, press "Delete Account". For security purposes, you will be prompted to manually enter either a phrase or your account password. Deleting your account is irreversible. If you are subscribed, you will be prompted to unsubscribe once deletion is complete.
